Chapter 6

Mrs. Bauckman’s lips curled with smugness as Kevin’s tone captured the attention of the few people present to hear it. Gwen would swear the older woman was watching a performance she helped to stage. It was only a hunch; and Gwen was not good yet at discerning between true intuition and a false impression.

He continued, “Did I hear you mention Mrs. Vincent? She has to be one of the most negative people in town.”

“Kevin,” Gwen with a scold.

She narrowed her eyes at him, taking him to task for his reckless words.

“Kevin,” Grandma Robby interrupted. “You’re not yourself right now what with everything that’s happened.”

“You told her?” he bellowed at Gwen. “May I have a word with you in my office, please?”

This was not only not the Kevin she knew, but not anyone really in the Town of Green that she knew. Even Mrs. Bauckman, who was at worst a gossip, had not ever raised her voice at anyone; at least not that she knew. Gwen skulked to the office as she was told. She walked past her food as it was being served. She had a feeling she wasn’t going to have an appetite for it after all.

She was right. Kevin closed the door behind her. The office was small and he was an imposing figure. That, coupled with the electric chemistry that transpired between them, spat or not, made the office awfully close quarters.

“I can’t work with someone who would broadcast my private business,” he began though trying to restrain himself.

“Are you talking about the theft?” she asked. “You announced it in the dining area of the eatery. Anyone could have heard that.”

“But no one but you did,” he argued.

“That you know,” she fired back. “My point is, that told me right there you weren’t concerned about privacy which I’ve honored. My grandmother is a trust worthy person.”

“Well, I am wondering if you are,” he challenged.

Gwen staggered with the force of his words, same as if he had pushed her. She clung to her grandmother’s warning that this was not the Kevin she knew. Still, she was out of her league to handle him. She was also just flat out stunned.

“If that’s the way you feel,” she said, her voice trembling with emotion. “I did a lot of work of you. I’ll have to think about this.”

“What’s there to think about?” asked Kevin.

“I’d like to know where this is coming from,” she barely managed.

He fired back, “You are the only person besides me, besides my bank, who had access to my business electronically. You connected that website you’re creating so that I can take orders on line and that’s when this all went down.”

Gwen’s mind spun a million miles a second, trying to make sense of what was happening. It was not true what he said. Any number of people, if they were adept at code as Morgan was, could have hacked him, if that is what happened. Gwen opened her mouth and no sound came out. She had no words.
